Communist Romania in 1953. A small village is preparing for the wedding of a young couple. As soon as the wedding ceremony is over, militant communists interrupt the celebration declaring a one week period of national mourning due to Stalin's death. Joy, laughter or toasts are not allowed. But, not so affected by Stalin's death, villagers decide to resist the rules and go on with the wedding their way: by having a silent wedding. The solution is as dared as inventive and fun: the feast will go on but everything, including the music, will be in mime.
Silent Wedding is a tragicomedy based on the true story which took place in the 1980s in a small rural village in Romania. The film exhibits the fine sense of humor that people have developed to deal with hardships. But how long will they resist celebrating without sound? What will happen when alcohol starts ruling them? And what consequences will it have on their lives?
Entertaining, absurd and surreal, it captures the very essence of the Romanian lifestyle in both funny and tragic ways.Bushuis (Room F 0.22)
